We are committed to Open Access and Open Science practices so that research outputs are findable, verifiable, and reusable.

Our position

We view Open Science as an infrastructure of trust. Open access to publications, data availability, and transparent editorial procedures improve reproducibility, accelerate knowledge exchange, and strengthen the connection between science and society.

ESS Press mission: to expand the reach, rigor, and relevance of research outputs so that readers can find, trust, and use published materials.

What we do in practice

  • Open Access to publications.
    Journal articles in journals we manage as a service provider are published OA on the journals’ own websites (their OA/APC policies and author instructions are published there). For books, monographs, and proceedings, we offer OA models and support self-archiving of accepted author versions (see Open Access & Self-Archiving).
  • FAIR data and transparency.
    We require a Data Availability Statement in all book-line projects and encourage depositing data/code in recognized repositories with persistent identifiers.
  • Open licensing.
    For OA books/chapters we use CC BY 4.0 (alternatives may be agreed). We aim to publish metadata under CC0.
  • Identifiers and connectivity.
    We assign DOI/ISBN, support ORCID, and synchronize metadata to improve discoverability.
  • Transparent peer review.
    Default is double-blind for the book line; alternative formats may be agreed and are always documented.
  • Long-term preservation.
    We provide archiving and support record versioning (corrections, notices, retractions).
  • Inclusion and accessibility.
    We aim to align with WCAG 2.2 AA and provide alternative formats upon request.

Guiding principles

  • Open where ethical and lawful. Personal/sensitive data are protected; restrictions are described transparently.
  • Attribution and reproducibility. Correct citations, licensing, and clear descriptions of methods and data.
  • Independence of editorial decisions. Funder roles and conflicts of interest are disclosed; decisions are made by an independent editor.
  • Integration with the research ecosystem. License compatibility, support for TDM of OA content, and open metadata.

How to publish openly with ESS Press

  1. Choose an OA model for your book/chapter/proceedings volume (as required by your funder, where applicable).
  2. Confirm licensing (typically CC BY 4.0).
  3. Prepare a DAS and deposit data/code in a repository with a DOI.
  4. Enable self-archiving of the AAM (no embargo) with proper attribution and a link to the VoR.
